Use software and free business ebooks to promote your online business
First, what is camtasia? It is a software that records everything you do on your computer screen. So, if I wanted to show people how to download one of my free business ebooks, I would start the camtasia software, open my browser and navigate to one of my business ebooks, open it, read it, etc. Also, I would record my voice to clarify what I was doing on the computer screen. When I was done, I would stop the software. Click a button to compile and voila! One camtasia video with voice over to upload to my website. I can also add title pages to add professionalism to my video. Also, I could make a video of a Powerpoint presentation. These videos can be posted on YouTube, your website, virtually anywhere you can post a document or link, you could post your video.
So, think about the possibilities of how this software could improve your online business. A 30 day trial is available at:

Finally - Forums!
Forums can also help you with SEO or search engine optimization. The idea is to find some forums on your topic of interest. For my website, I would find forums on free business ebooks and review what has been posted on the forum. I would review the questions and the answers people are providing. This is a good way to find out what people in my industry need and want. If I am able to provide it, that would be a great income stream for me. I people were looking for a free business ebook on SEO, I would write one and offer it on my website.
As far as SEO goes, my goal on the forum is not only research into my area of expertise, but to present myself as an expert in my field. I want to make some posts on each forum that are intelligent and offer a great deal of free infromation and I do not want to push my products. I just want to offer my expert advice to everyone. My name will have a link to my website so if people like what I have to say, they will check it out.
Above all, I want to ensure that my posts include my keywords, that is what will help me with SEO.

More SEO - Blogs
The idea here is to create a blog and optimize it for your keywords, just as you would you website. Since one of my keywords is free business ebooks, I would use free busines ebooks in the title, description and content of the blog. I would use it in each post as it naturally occurs. I could use it in the labels of my posts. If my posts contain link back to my website - great! If the text of the link back to my website contains my keywords - even better!
Use ping-o-matic to advise the world each time you post to your blog.
Also, tell all of your friends and family and blog subscribers to subscribe to the rss feed of your blog and put it on their Yahoo and Google home pages. Then, when you make a post, the search engines will know about it as other people are being notified about the change in content. Since your posts contain links back to your website, your website will also get crawled by the search engine "bots", leading to an increase in your rankings.
When you search your keywords, you may see your blog as well as your website in the results - fantastic! Two ways for potential customers to reach you.
Stay tuned for a discussion on using forums to increase your rankings....

More SEO
Three ways to increase your website's ranking using content on other websites are:
- article websites
- blogs
- forums
Once you have your keywords figured out (see previous posts on keywords), you can write articles using your identified keywords in both the title and body of your article. For example, if my keyword is "free business ebook", I would call my article, "How to Use Free Business Ebooks to Start an Online Business" and I would be sure to include my keyword phrase a few times in the body of my article. I don't want to use it too many times. If my article is truly about free business ebooks, then I should use my keywords naturally throughout the article. Once it is written, I can post my article on many different article directories. These are sites that contain thousands of articles on all different topics. How this helps your website's rankings, is that you get to include a link back your site with your author bio. If the link contains your keywords too, all the better. When someone searches your keywords, they may get your site or the article directory's site as a result. If they get the article directory site, great. It contains a link back to you site, resulting in a potential customer for you.
Another great thing about article directories is that they are posting new content every day, so Google is indexing their site every day. This means that you could write your article, post it, and possible get in the search engine results in as little as 24-48 hours, which is phenomenal!
Stay tuned for a discussion on blogs and forums....

Where new business ideas come from
When I got married in 1993 (15 years already!) I wrote a wedding planner. I sold about 300 copies over the next few years on my own and then it sat on a shelf. I thought perhaps I could sell it on the net.
So, I went to wordtracker (1st step) to see if there was a need for a wedding planner without a lot of competition. I found that there are TONS of wedding planners out there and too much competition to start a new business. So, was I discouraged? No!
Next, I searched all kinds of keywords related to weddings and planning weddings, etc. I found that quite a few people are searching for do it yourself wedding invitations. Now, I love desktop publishing and I actually teach Word to college students, so I know quite a bit about designing documents, merging addresses, etc.
So, now comes the business idea. What about a site that gives away a customizable free wedding invitation that you make yourself? If you want others, you can preview them but then you buy them? Or a manual on how to design and create one with templates included. My bonus item will be my wedding planner! Perfect. I registered the domain "do-it-yourself-wedding-invitations.com and now I am all set. I will be busy for the summer, but development for my new business will start in August or Sept. I am super excited!
So, now you see how something from our past, or a hobby or even a job can turn into a business. What I thought would be my product turned out to be my bonus, but my work skills will help me create a sough-after product in no time!
Good luck finding your next business!

HTML eBook
Instructions for Developing Web Pages Ulitizing HTML
I am getting certified as a web developer and I recently took an HTML course. I really enjoyed it and I found that it really helped me with my web sites. I use Frontpage, however, I can now go into the code and fix errors that I find. Also, when I am posting my articles on article directory sites, I can easily add numbered and unordered lists and bolding, etc. to my articles. I'm sure there are many other things I know now that I didn't know last year, but off the top of my head these are the first 2. All things considered, web pages are MUCH easier for me now than they used to be - plus they look a whole lot better now! Check out the HTML ebook and see if it helps you too.

Search Engine Optimization
SEO is important beceause it doesn't matter how nice your website is or how great your product is, if no one can find it, you won't sell anything. It's like having a million dollar store in Cape Dorset, Canada (small population). The majority of the public won't have access to your store, so you will only sell to the population of Cape Dorset and not the general public.
So how do you get lots of traffic to your site? There are some "black hat" techniques that I would NOT recommend. These would include "stuffing" your site with a million copies of your keywords in very small print. This type of action could cause you to get "black listed" by the search engines. That would be very bad!
Good and legal way to get traffic are out there and should be utilized. What you want is to "optimize" the pages of your website so that when a potential customer keys in certain words into the search engine, your site comes up in the first page or two of results. Of course, first you need to know what your keywords are (what words people are keying into the search engines). You can do this through Wordtracker and I have an earlier post all about Wordtracker.
I had an interesting experience with SEO a few months ago. I do some contract work for a company that was not getting a lot of traffic. So I decided to see what I could do. I researched on Wordtracker and found a few keyword phrases that I could target. Here's what I did:
- add keywords to title tags for each page in a sentence that showed a feature of service of company;
- add keywords to meta tags;
- add keywords to meta description, including a sentence that showed benefits of using our company;
- add keywords where they would occur naturally in the content of the website;
- post articles to website as well as article directories that include keywords in the title and the body of the article;
After doing the above (I spent probably a total of 10 hours doing the above), we went from not in the top 300 searches to #3 for one keyword and 19 for another. That was only after writing 3 articles, so there is still a lot I can do, but this was a promising start. Already, the traffic is increasing.
So, try using the above techniques. I will give you other techniques later, but this is a good start.

Search Engine Optimization Strategies
You have a beautiful website, great product and terrific sales copy, so of course, everyone who visits your site will buy your product but how will your customers get to your site in the first place? If you have done all of your research, your site will be optimized for your specific keywords already, but getting listed by the top search engines may take awhile.
Here is a trick that I use. Try writing a few articles and posting them to the top article directories. I like ezinearticles.com because it is very popular and, once you have expert author status, the waiting time is practically nil. You do not have to write a book for this, just articles that are about 300-400 words. Enough to say that you are an expert on your topic.
Be sure not to directly promote your product in your article. Your article should be free valuable information only. You can use your author bio to include a link to your website or blog and get traffic that way.
By choosing article directories that are popular, there is a much greater chance of your article getting indexed by the search engines quicker than your own site. If you include your keywords in your article title and throughout your article, you may start ranking for your keywords in as little as a few days. Even if it takes a week or two, it will be much shorter than waiting for the google bots!
Happy writing!

What to write on your website?
- My eBook, "Start a Successful Internet Business Today" includes 3 free business ebooks designed to help you create a successful website. You can view more details on this ebook at www.free-business-ebook.com
- Derek Gehl (an internet marketing "big wig") has a great blog which can be found at http://blog.marketingtips.com which contains a ton of great information. The article found at http://blog.marketingtips.com/wp/5-step-headline/internet-marketing-strategies contains valuable tips for creating salescopy for your website with compelling benefits and catchy headlines.
You have probably seen a number of "sales copy" websites selling a product. You scroll through the description of the product and can buy it at the end. This "long sales page" is the type that works. There are many reasons why this works (for single product websites) and Derek's blog explains some of this to you.
Once you have the basics down pat and want to try your hand at writing your own sales copy for your product, I have a great free resource for you. You can download a free copy of Sales Letter Creator, a software program that helps you build a sales copy webpage, step by step, at www.free-business-ebook.com, my website.

Choosing Your Website
Now we need to choose a website name or domain name. The name of your website should reflect the main keyword that you have chosen for your area of expertise. If you know alot about budgies and, through your keyword research, you found that a lot of people are looking for information on how to train budgies (budgie training is your keyword phrase) and you know how to do that (and there is not a lot of competition in this market) you have found a niche market just for you! Now you need a website, which starts with registering a name. Whether you sell other people's products or give away free ebooks on your website, you still need a name that reflects your topic.
What you don't need is a website with your name in the url. No one will find this website unless they know you and no one can tell what this website is about by looking at the name. If you find that the name www.budgietraining.com is available (I don't know if it is or not), this would be perfect for you since your keyword is "budgie training".
There are a number of places you can check to see if a url or website name is available to purchase. It costs about $10.00 per year to own a url, so it is not a lot of money to secure a site that fits in with your keyword of choice.
Here is a great article about choosing and registering a url:
http://www.wordtracker.com/academy/choosing-a-domain-name-do-your-keyword-research-first
It is on the Wordtracker website and I'm sure you will find it helpful in choosing your domain or website name.
Good luck!

Finding Affiliate Products
Another such website is http://www.affiliatebot.com/ where you can either list a product as a "merchant" or become an affiliate of a program as a "publisher". The products as listed together with the % commission that is offered on each sale.
You may be wondering how you will promote products like this. Well, a few posts ago, we discussed finding your area of interest and then I directed you to find some products relating to your area of interest. Here's why.
As you are starting out, you don't likely have a product that matches exactly what people are looking for on the web. If you did, you would already be rich! If you are interested in and have knowledge of an area that people are searching for, you can start by selling other people's products that relate to your area of interest. If your interest is in time management and you find that people are searching for time management tips on the web, perhaps you will find some time management software or ebooks on these affiliate websites that you can promote on your website. You can develop a site with all kinds of tips and articles on time management (since you are an expert on this topic, writing some tips and other content shouldn't be too hard for you). You will attract people to your site with your valuable content. Once they are there, they may purchase a product, resulting in a commission for you.
Take a look at http://www.affiliatebot.com/ and see if you can find any products that complement your area of interest or that spark your creative juices and start you writing those articles and content.

Other people's products
The affiliate programs are accessible either on the left of the home page or under "directory". There are many categories to choose from. Hopefully, your area of interest is there somewhere, or at least a product or service that relates somehow to your specialty.
I have a couple of other sites like this that we can review and then I want to discuss search engine optimization. Once we have a couple or a few products that we would consider selling on a website, I want us to look at the big picture before actually setting up a website. When we are ready to set it up, what elements does it need to be successful. If we know this upfront, it will save us a lot of re-doing later on.
Of course, we are also going to talk about other things we can sell on our website, as well as giving away things (like free ebooks). I also want to give you access to some other free business ebooks I have found, so stay tuned.
Until next time...

What to sell on your site
One of the options we discussed a couple of days ago is selling other people's products. That is called affiliate marketing. Basically, you find a product that you like, then you sell that product and the company who makes it give you a commission on the sale. You can do this a couple of ways:
- You can find a specific company and, if they have an affiliate program, you would register with the, start selling it on your website and collect commissions when you make sales.
- Go to an online marketplace and choose which products to sell.
If you haven't heard of Clickbank yet, check it out at www.clickbank.com and see what they have to offer. The commissions are high (usually 50-75%) and all of the products are electronic.
See if you can find an ebook on your business of choice. Good luck!

Another Free eBook
I am still going through it, so I'm not sure what the outcome is yet, but the beginning is great. A word of advice, though. If you are brand new to internet marketing, you may get lost in some of her terminology, although there is a glossary at the end. She has a background in web development, so she discusses her experiences from that perspective. Despite this, I really think she has an interesting product here and that you can learn from her mistakes. From the Table of Contents, it appears that she really does cover everything in her 30 day endeavour.
Enjoy!

What will you sell on your website?
Now that you are an expert in keyword research, have you found some keywords for your area of interest? Hopefully, you found some with high KEIs. Now what?
It's time to do some brainstorming on what your website will be about. If your area of interest was hampsters and you found the keyword "hampster training" had a high KEI, what could you do on your website?
There are a few different things your website can do:
- Sell a product that you have to sell (physical product like hampster cages);
- Sell a ditigal product that you wrote (an ebook on how to train your hampster);
- Give free information on how to train your hampster (an information website);
- Sell other people's hampster products;
- Sell a monthly newletters that people subscribe to;
- What else can you think of?
Do some thinking about what your specific knowledge is in your area of interest. What do you have to offer that you know people are looking for? We will discuss all of the above options in upcoming posts.
Have a great day!

Free Business eBook - Keyword research
You can make the best website in the world and have the best product on the market but if people aren't actually searching for your product with keywords, no one will find you!
What keywords/niche markets can you come up with?
Barb
Monday, January 14, 2008
Finding a Niche
Once you have found what you are interested in, the next step is to find a niche market. If you are wondering what that is, it is a group of people who are all looking for the answer to a problem, or information on a certain topic. If hampsters is your area of expertise, perhaps there are people out there who want to learn how to teach their hampsters how to do tricks. Since you know how to do that, that's what your website will be about. Maybe your business will be to offer an ebook on how to teach your hampster tricks.
How do you find what people are searching for? I use Wordtracker. You can find it at http://www.wordtracker.com/ and they will let you try a scaled-down version for free (I think it only lets you search MSN). For about $7.00 a day or $30.00 a week you can have access to wordtracker.
What you will do, once you have access to wordtracker, is to start entering words that describe your interests into "keyword universe". Start with something general, like "hampsters". Wordtracker will provide you with a bunch of words similar to hampsters and as you click on each one, a list will appear on the right side of the screen with words and phrases that people are actually searching for on the internet. Add the ones that look good to you to the basket. Once you have a bunch of keywords in your basket, do a "competition search" and find out how many people are searching for those keywords compared to how many competing websites there are. Wordtracker will assign a "KEI" number for each result. You are looking for a high KEI (at least 10). This will be a keyword that has a lot of searchers and not a lot of answering websites.
Once you have some keywords with high KEIs, you can brainstorm about what website you might be able to have that solves this problem.
Next time, we will discuss the types of websites there are and what you can sell on yours.
Happy wordtracking!

New Website
My goal is to find like-minded individuals who are having the same difficulties I had when I started my online publishing business and alleviate many of their problems and concerns. My biggest problem when I was starting out was that it didn't take me very long to get overwhelmed. The elarning curve was great and, to top it all off, I ended up with TONS of ebooks and products sitting on my hard drive and I just didn't know where to start.
Well, now I DO know where to start!
If you are starting out, my advice to you would be to make a list of all of the hobbies and interests you have. You goal is to create a business for yourself in an area that you love, so naturally, if you base your business on one of your hobbies or interests, you will be motivated to work because you like the topic and you won't mind "going" to work - again because you like (or hopefully love) the area you chose to create your business in.
So, you may be thinking, "What if my interest is in hampsters? How can I make an online business in the area of hampsters?" Well, you may be surprised! For the next day, make a list of your interests and hobbies (I mean everything!) and then my new post will take it from there.
Happy brainstorming!
